DC Studios Reportedly Puts WONDER WOMAN Movie on Hold Following SUPERGIRL's Poor Performance

It’s hard to imagine DC Studios putting Wonder Womanon the sidelines, but that’s the latest rumor making the rounds following the disappointing performance of Supergirl.

There’s already a lot of excitement surroundingAdria Arjona and the possibility that she’ll play Diana Prince in next summer’s Man of Tomorrow. Her casting hasn’t been confirmed as Wonder Woman, but if that’s who she’s playing, fans could get their first look at the DCU’s Amazon warrior before her solo movie eventually arrives.

The question now is when that movie will actually happen. Despite previous reports that DC Studios was moving quickly on Wonder Woman, Knight Edge Media’s Caleb Williams claims the project has been put on the back burner because of Supergirl’s poor performance.

According to Williams, Wonder Woman hasn’t been cancelled, but terms such as “on hold” and “paused” accurately describe its current status. He also says the movie isn’t in pre-production.

If true, that’s a pretty disappointing development for one of DC’s biggest characters. Ana Nogueira, who wrote Supergirl, was also hired by DC Studios to write both Teen Titans and Wonder Woman.

James Gunn has repeatedly said that DC Studios won’t move ahead with a movie until everyone involved is confident in the screenplay. Which, for the record, didn’t work out too well with Supergirl. That screenplay was the worst.

Gunn previously called Wonder Woman a "priority," but clarified exactly what that meant, saying: "I wouldn't call that fast-tracked. Nothing is going to be shot unless we’re as sure as we can be that the script is good."

Considering what happened with Supergirl, a lot of fans probably have a few questions about how that quality-control process worked there.

There’s also the Warner Bros. Discovery factor. Gunn and Peter Safran run DC Studios, but they still answer to the larger company, and it wouldn’t be surprising if executives were nervous about immediately moving forward with another major DC movie written by Supergirl’s screenwriter after that film’s box office performance.

Nogueira was still enthusiastic about Wonder Woman while promoting Supergirl in June, although she made it clear that both of her upcoming DC projects were early in development. She said:

"[Teen Titans and Wonder Woman are] in very different stages, I’ll say that. They’re all just such great characters, and I can’t believe I get to figure out what I would do with them the way that we did with Kara and Supergirl. But it’s still early days on both."

She went on to discuss what it meant to have Gunn and Safran trust her with these characters, saying: "It’s a huge compliment and a vote of confidence [to get the green light from James and Peter Safran]. It’s honestly quite overwhelming. I can’t even think of the size of it.

"I just really try to keep my head down and make sure that I like the work that I’m doing, and that I think that it’s good work. I can’t write something that I don’t like. I can’t write something that I don’t see. I don’t have that gear."

DC Studios’ upcoming movie calendar is also looking pretty thin. Clayface arrives next month, followed by Man of Tomorrow next summer, but nothing has been announced for 2028.

Things aren’t much clearer on the television side. Beyond Creature Commandos Season 2, DC Studios hasn’t confirmed another new series after The People vs. Gorilla Grodd.

There are also conflicting reports about whether Paradise Lost is still moving forward. That Themyscira-set series is expected to take place hundreds of years in the past, meaning Diana Prince likely won’t be part of it.

Still, I’m having a hard time buying the idea that Supergirl struggling would cause DC Studios to pump the brakes on Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman isn’t Supergirl. Diana is one-third of DC’s iconic trinity alongside Superman and Batman, and she’s one of the most recognizable superheroes on the planet. The character has already proven that she can carry a blockbuster movie, and her popularity is on a completely different level from Supergirl’s.

In fact, I think DC Studios would have been in a much better position had it introduced Arjona as Wonder Woman and given her a solo movie before making Supergirl.

Assuming Arjona really is Diana in Man of Tomorrow, the reaction to that possibility shows how much interest there is in seeing her wield the Lasso of Truth and step into the role.

That doesn’t guarantee a successful movie, obviously. The script still needs to work, the character needs to be handled properly, and DC Studios shouldn’t rush a movie into production simply because Wonder Woman is a major name.

But shelving or pausing Diana’s movie specifically because Supergirl bombed? That’s where this rumor becomes harder to swallow.

If anything, Wonder Woman feels like exactly the kind of character DC Studios should be leaning on right now. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are the foundation of DC, and it would be strange to build a new cinematic universe while leaving one of its three biggest heroes waiting on the bench.

Until Gunn or DC Studios confirms that the project has actually been paused, though, I’d take this one with a grain of salt.
