New LANTERNS Trailer Reveals Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern Suit, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, and a Bigger DCU Mystery

DC Studios just dropped a new trailer for Lanterns, and it finally gives fans what they’ve been waiting for: a proper look at Hal Jordan using his Green Lantern powers.

After months of debate over how grounded the HBO series looked, this footage leans much harder into the cosmic side of the DCU while still keeping that gritty detective-story vibe intact.

The series has sparked a lot of conversation ever since details first surfaced. Some fans were expecting a massive space opera loaded with aliens, giant constructs, and intergalactic chaos right out of the gate.

Instead, early footage suggested something more restrained and mystery-driven. Showrunner Chris Mundy even sounded slightly frustrated recently when addressing concerns, reminding people that a Green Lantern series was obviously going to feature “a lot of green in it.”

This latest trailer feels like DC saying, “Relax, we’ve got this.” There are flashes of energy constructs, a better look at the cosmic threat hanging over the story, and finally a glimpse of Kyle Chandler suited up as Hal Jordan.

It’s brief, but it’s enough to get Green Lantern fans fired up. The footage also delivers on the promised appearance of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, who looks exactly like the loudmouth Lantern fans hoped he’d be.

The trailer also confirms that the story unfolds across two timelines. The first takes place in 2016, where Hal Jordan is still operating as Earth’s Green Lantern. The second jumps ahead to 2026, where Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart appears to have stepped into a much larger role.

That structure sounds like it’ll be a major part of the show’s identity. Mundy previously explained that the creative team looked to the first season of True Detective for inspiration. The comparison goes beyond mood and atmosphere because the series will reportedly unfold across two interconnected investigations separated by ten years.

In the 2016 storyline, Hal is investigating a shooting tied to something extraterrestrial. The problem is that nobody around him really believes what he’s uncovering, especially the local sheriff played by Kelly Macdonald. Around the same time, John Stewart is still a rookie Green Lantern who gets pulled into Hal’s orbit and the mystery surrounding the case.

Then things apparently spiral into something much stranger in the 2026 timeline. “That becomes a second mystery that we know is down the road for us,” Mundy hinted. “So eventually two different mysteries get worked out over the course of the show.”

He also explained that the series will be “less of a whodunnit” and more concerned with “what happened and why? We think of this as a relationship show between John and Hal, and there’s a lot to unpack over the course of the eight episodes.”

A grounded sci-fi detective thriller centered on Hal Jordan and John Stewart is a smart way to introduce the Green Lantern mythology into the DCU without immediately overwhelming audiences with deep-space lore.

At the same time, the trailer makes it clear this isn’t abandoning the larger cosmic elements fans associate with the Green Lantern Corps. I’m excited to see how this story plays out!

If DC Studios can successfully balance the noir-style mystery with the larger interstellar mythology, Lanterns could end up being an awesome show!

We’ll find out how it all comes together when Lanterns premieres on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
