Zack Snyder Explains Why the SUCKER PUNCH Director’s Cut Still Hasn’t Been Released

Fans waiting to see Zack Snyder finally unleash his Director’s Cut of Sucker Punch are going to have to hang in there a little longer. The filmmaker still wants to release his alternate version of the 2011 fantasy action movie, but there’s a frustrating business issue keeping it locked away.

During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder explained that getting the Sucker Punch Director’s Cut released isn’t as simple as convincing Warner Bros. to put it out. Existing licensing agreements apparently need to run their course first.

“It’s one of those things where every time I call over to Warner Bros. to say, ‘Okay, we should do the director’s cut of Sucker Punch,’ obviously there’s a lot of conversations,” Snyder shared.

The problem comes down to companies that have already licensed the existing version of Sucker Punch. According to Snyder, releasing another cut while those agreements are active could potentially affect the value of the version those companies paid to carry.

He explained: “There’s all these weird things, like you have to wait for some licenses to completely finish. Because, say I’ve bought the original Sucker Punch… and I’m showing it on my streaming service or somewhere, and then I release the Director’s Cut. Apparently that diminishes the value of the thing that I bought. That’s what I’ve been told.”

Basically, the Sucker Punch Director’s Cut remains stuck in licensing limbo. Snyder still intends to get it released, but there’s currently no official release date or window.

Sucker Punch was based on an original concept from Snyder, who famously described the movie as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.” That’s still a pretty damn accurate description of the wild movie he made.

The story follows Babydoll, a young woman committed to a psychiatric institution following the death of her mother. She retreats into a fantasy world where she and the other inmates become powerful warriors, battling their way through increasingly elaborate scenarios as they search for the items needed to escape.

Emily Browning stars as Babydoll alongside Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm, and Scott Glenn.

Sucker Punch didn’t exactly light up the box office when it arrived in 2011, but it has developed a cult following over the years. Its insane fantasy imagery, action sequences, music, and unmistakable Snyder style have kept fans talking about it long after its theatrical run.

For fans who have spent years wondering what Snyder’s preferred version of Sucker Punch looks like, the good news is that he still wants us to see it.
