DC's MAN OF TOMORROW Adds Matthew Lillard to Its Expanding Cast in Mystery Role

by · GeekTyrant

There’s no slowing down the DC machine right now, and the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow just pulled in another familiar face. Matthew Lillardhas officially joined the growing ensemble for the highly anticipated sequel, adding even more intrigue to a project that’s already packed with heavy hitters and big ideas.

According to reports, Lillard is stepping into the world of DC Studios for the next chapter in James Gunn’s evolving vision of Superman. Gunn is directing, producing, and writing the film, with David Corenswet returning as Clark Kent. As of now, details on who Lillard is playing are being kept under wraps, and DC Studios isn’t offering any hints.

That mystery role drops Lillard into a cast that includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Lars Eidinger taking on the long-awaited role of Brainiac.

The supporting lineup includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. On top of that, Adria Arjona is set to play Maxima, and Aaron Pierre is also part of the film.

This sequel isn’t just building on the hero versus villain formula. It’s pushing into more complicated territory. Corenswet hinted at that shift during a recent appearance, explaining the film explores what it’s like “saving the world with your sworn enemy,” while Hoult added that the movie introduces a “new villain and an unlikely alliance.”

That villain is Brainiac, and he’s shaping up to be a major force. Bringing him into the story while forcing Superman and Luthor into some kind of uneasy partnership opens the door for a different kind of tension. Those two don’t exactly trust each other, and that friction is likely going to drive a lot of the story’s edge.

Lillard’s addition comes during a pretty packed stretch for the actor. He recently returned to the Scream franchise with Scream 7, reprising his role as Stu Macher. He’s also appeared in Season 2 of Cross and showed up in Daredevil: Born Again, which just wrapped its latest season on Disney+. Next, he’s set to appear in A24’s upcoming Carrie series.

Production on Man of Tomorrow is already underway, with a release date locked in for July 9, 2027.
