Coronation Street Platts 'rocked' by return of serial killer as Gail's exit looms

Coronation Street is rumoured to be welcoming back one of its most notorious villains.

Clayton Hibbs, played by Callum Harrison, first appeared on the soap in 2016 as Shona Platt's (Julia Goulding) estranged son and quickly caused havoc on the cobbles. In a shocking scene from 2016, Clayton stabbed David Platt's (Jack P Shephard) wife Kylie (Paula Lane) in broad daylight on the cobbles.

The tragic event saw David cradling his dying wife in his arms. David attempted to take revenge on Clayton but the troublesome teenager was eventually arrested and convicted of murder.

Clayton received a sentence of fifteen years to life and was last seen in the soap in 2020 from behind bars. However, according to The Metro, actor Callum Harrison has already filmed scenes for Clayton's return, which are due to air next month. The report also suggests that his return will not be permanent.

The Platt family, who have been through a turbulent time on the cobbles recently, will undoubtedly be shaken by Clayton's return. Not only has it been revealed that David stole Damon's (Ciaran Griffiths) illicit money, but Gail Platt (Helen Worth) was hospitalised last week after suffering a heart attack, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Furthermore, later this year, Gail will be departing the cobbles after 50 years. It was confirmed earlier this year that actress Helen Worth had decided to leave the show.

Reflecting on her imminent exit, Helen expressed: "This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding."

She continued by saying: "I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew."

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
