Sought-after Beryl Cook signed prints star in Plymouth auction
by Paul Keen · PlymouthLiveThere’s a distinctly local flavour to the next fine art auction at Plymouth Auction Rooms on Wednesday, October 14, with Plymouth and South West artists featuring prominently throughout the sale.
No Plymouth art auction would seem quite complete without Beryl Cook, and this time there is a wonderful collection of around 20 signed limited-edition prints.
Among them is Bryant Park, alongside the ever-popular Dog in the Dolphin and Staircase – instantly recognisable scenes filled with Cook’s characteristic humour and larger-than-life characters.
Another familiar Plymouth name is Brian Pollard, whose distinctive, colourful work continues to attract a loyal following.
The auction includes examples of his unmistakable naïve style, while works by Arth Lawr and Mary Martin add further local interest. Martin’s charming paintings of the Tamar Valley capture the landscape and coastline with warmth and colour.
The sale is developing into an eclectic collection, ranging from traditional paintings and coastal scenes to contemporary and naïve works, with estimates to suit established collectors as well as those simply looking for something original to hang at home.
There is still time to enter paintings for the auction, with cataloguers on hand next week to assess and prepare further works for the sale.
If you have a painting tucked away, inherited pictures you know little about, or perhaps a work by a local artist, now is a good time to find out what it might achieve at auction.
