Hottest ever month of June recorded in Dublin

LAST MONTH WAS the hottest June on record in Dublin according to Met Éireann’s new climate statement.

Thirteen stations around the country broke their June maximum temperature records. Of those, six broke their all-time temperature records while one station matched the record. 

The highest temperature recorded was 32.2℃ in Athenry Thursday 25 June. 

Other stations that broke their all-time records were Mace Head, Co Galway (30.5 °C), Claremorris, Co Mayo (31.3 °C), Knock Airport, Co Mayo (30.3 °C), Markree, Co Sligo (30.2 °C) and Finner, Co Donegal (30.6 °C).

Along with having its hottest month on record Casement station in Dublin recorded the second-highest minimum temperature ever at 20.3 °C.

Dublin also recorded the highest mean monthly temperature of 16.2°C at the Phoenix Park.

Rainfall was also above average around the country. Last month was the eleventh wettest June on record. 

All air temperatures were above their long term averages. 

June was also sunnier than usual with the number of dull days recorded only ranging between one and six. 

In June Europe experienced its most severe heatwave ever with temperature records smashed in many countries. 

According to the World Weather Attribution group of scientists, this heatwave is the most severe ever recorded in Europe and would have been “virtually impossible” this early in the summer without climate change.

More than 1,300 excess deaths were recorded in Europe since 21 June, according to the UN health agency, including several children who died in locked cars and youths who drowned as they sought relief in unsupervised swimming spots.
