Twitch CEO claims GTA 6 Online will launch in 2027

While Rockstar and Take Two have steadfastly refused to acknowledge that a GTA Online 2, GTA 6 Online or whatever it ends up being called is actually a thing, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has no such qualms.

Speaking with journalists at Tokyo Game Show, Clancy told Bloomberg that, having had meetings with Rockstar, he anticipates great things for streamers on his platform. GTA 6 is going to be a big bump in two months time, but then GTA 6 multiplayer won’t launch until 2027.

“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

There has historically been a lag between the launch of a Rockstar game and the online side of it as well, but Rockstar has had to specifically note that “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” both on its own site and across storefronts.

Take Two isn’t even providing any greater context to investors, CEO Strauss Zelnick telling investors that:

“GTA VI is a singleplayer title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA VI release and beyond.”

But…. look…. of course a new GTA Online is coming, but without wishing to detail their plans in advance, they have to market it as the product that it will be on day one.

Looking back to the last two games, Grand Theft Auto V launched on 17th September 2013, with Grand Theft Auto Online arriving a fortnight later on 1st October 2013. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on 26th October 2018 and Red Dead Online was first playable from 27th November. That said, strictly speaking, this was just a demo and Red Dead Online’s full launch actually came on 14th May 2019.

But there is a further possibility. As the 2013 edition of GTA Online has been upgraded and remastered for later console generations, GTA Online has become available as a standalone purchase, and so too has Red Dead Online for RDR 2. Take Two could be looking to branch it off from GTA 6 from the start, perhaps with cheaper or bundled in access for those who have bought the single-player game. Or maybe that’s just an idea for a few years down the line.
