For a studio that killed off their game, Bungie sure are talking like Destiny 2 is going to continue

21 May 2026 will be remembered by many people as the day Bungie killed Destiny 2.   The final live-service content was released on 9th June 2026, and after that any further updates would just be bug fixes.

Shortly after that, they announced lay-offs but hundreds of thousands of players returned to the game for one last hurrah, and social media was awash with people lamenting the death of one of the favourite games.

All was quiet for a few months, then, out of the blue, a video post from Bungie seemed to apologise for messing up the game and announced they would be unvaulting content they had previously removed due to technical issues.

A new blog post on the Bungie website has more details on the unvaulting, the first pass of which will include

  • Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns
  • Strikes from the above releases
  • Raids, and Raid Lairs from the above releases
  • Menagerie Activity with reprised rewards

They have also “stretch” goals

  • Free Roam Destinations (Public Events, Lost Sectors, Escalation Protocol, etc.)
  • Seasonal Activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23)
  • Raid and Raid Lair Weapon updates
  • PvP Maps

Preproduction is underway, with full production starting in February 2027.  Also in the works is Destiny 2 Celebration, “We believe we need to have a celebration in Destiny 2, beyond Monument of Triumph, for the community that provides new updates for you all to enjoy. More details to come!” say Bungie.

The blog post is littered with references to Destiny 2 continuing, talking about the “new journey together” and “how we’re working to reimagine Destiny’s future.”

Discussing the unvaulting, the blog post states “As we’re looking to build the future of Destiny, we need to find balance. While we’d love to bring back some additional activities, or refresh things like our New Light experience, it could come at a cost for what we want to build for you in the future.”

They also tease  “Redacted: Launch Ventrilo Message: ‘We’re back’”

Reading between the lines it does look like Bungie is doing what the fans suggested: Take a break, get things in order and then come back stronger. Getting killed off and then being resurrected is part of Destiny lore, so that would be fitting.
