The Sinking City 2 will ship out for release this summer
by Stefan L · tsaFrogwares has announced that The Sinking City 2 will launch this summer for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, delving deep into Lovercraftian survival horror with a new gameplay trailer.
Set in 1920s United States and the supernaturally flooded city of Arkham, The Sinking City 2 is taking a few sidesteps away from the original. Where that had more of a gumshoe investigation in an open world, this sequel shifts to more of a survival horror experience, pushing combat, exploration and focusing in with a more semi-open world to enhance the Lovecraftian setting. You will still investigate and solve mysteries though, but it’s more integrated with the rest of the gameplay.
Writing in a press release, Frogwares game director Alexander Gresko said, “Our idea to take a chance with The Sinking City 2 and create something more in the survival horror genre has really come together. The leaps and progress we’ve made are clear to all of us on the team, and now we’re eager to see how it resonates with players, both new and our existing fans.
“While the genre shift has allowed us to really grow creatively, we’re holding onto the investigative roots we’re known for. We’ve prioritized combat, survival, and exploration, with investigation as a beneficial layer for those who want that aspect of the game.
“And of course, we’ve made sure to wrap everything in a memorable, mature narrative, which our fans know and love us for. This time around, the story is more personal to our protagonist, while still delivering our signature Frogwares take on gray morality and Lovecraftian themes.”
The Sinking City 2 was announced in March of 2024, following Frogwares successful bid at securing the publishing rights to The Sinking City. The Kickstarter campaign for The Sinking City 2 has a goal of $105,000, with the funds primarily being used as a safety net for the studio, as Frogwares is based in Ukraine. Securing the publishing rights for themselves also allowed Frogwares to return to the first game and release a remaster for newer hardware last year.
The original The Sinking City was a decent take on the familiar tentacle-filled setting – while our The Sinking City review dished out a 6/10, Steve said, “this is probably the best Lovecrat adaptation since Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth, but it still never really lives up to its potential.”
Here’s hoping for the second.
