Events ahead of Bahuroopi theatre festival to begin in Mysuru on Jan. 11
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe theme of this year’s Bahuroopi National Theatre Festival is ‘Liberation: Social justice–movements and theatre’, and Rangayana is gearing up to make the festival an interesting affair for theatre enthusiasts who throng the repertory.
Even as the festival will unfold on January 14, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visiting Rangayana to inaugurate the event, a series of events will be held ahead of the festival.
The salient features of the festival include a multilingual theatre festival, national symposium, film festival, folk performance, book exhibition, handicraft expo and demonstration, desi food fest, painting expo, street plays besides special programmes for the children as part of ‘Makkala Bahuroopi’.
The street plays as part of Bahuroopi will be inaugurated at the Chikka Gadiyara Circle here on Saturday at 10.30 a.m. MCC Commissioner Ashaad Ur Rahman Shariff will inaugurate the street plays.
The street play performances will be held at Chikka Gadiyara, Church Circle ,and Kesare on January 11; Srirampura, Vivekananda Nagar and Andolana Circle on January 12; Halli Bogadi, Hinkal, and Hootagalli on January 13; Metagalli, Surya Bakery, and Kumbarakoppal on January 13; Nanju Malige, Ashokapuram, and Chamundipuram on January 13.
A painting workshop will be held on Friday at B.V. Karanth Rangachavadi at 11.30 a.m. Devaraj A., Dean, CAVA, will inaugurate the painting workshop.
Janapada Utsava will be held from January 13 to 19 at Kindari Jogi on Rangayana premises. Folk artist Savita will inaugurate the utsava on January 13 at 6 p.m. Talluru Shivarama Shetty, president, Karnataka Yakshagana Academy, Bengaluru, will preside over the programme.
Minister in-charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa will inaugurate the Bahuroopi Film Festival on January 14 at 11 a.m. at Bhoomigeetha. Actor Bhavana Ramanna will be the chief guest. Bahuroopi Film Festival convener Manu K. will deliver the keynote address. K.V. Nagarajamurthy, chairman, Karnataka Nataka Academy, and Sadhu Kokila, chairman, Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, Bengaluru, will be present.
Mr. Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the Bahuroopi Theatre Festival on January 14 at Vanaranga at 5 p.m. Actor Atul Kulkarni from Mumbai will inaugurate Rangotsava. Dr. Mahadevappa will inaugurate the book and handicrafts expo while Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi will release souvenirs and Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will inaugurate the painting expo. The inaugural event will be followed by Sufi qawwali by Kalyana Karnataka Sufiyana troupe.
On January 15 at 6 p.m., actor Prakash Raj will inaugurate Children’s Bahuroopi at Kalamandira. The first play on January 14 will be staged at 7.30 p.m. while on other days of the festival, the plays will be staged at 7 p.m. Plays will be staged at Bhoomigeetha, Kiru Rangamandira, Vanaranga, and Kalamandira.
Multilingual actor and writer Revathi will inaugurate a symposium on ‘Social justice – movements and theatre’ at B.V. Karanth Rangachavadi at 10 a.m. Rangayana director Satish Tiptur will deliver the keynote address. Writer Banu Mushtaq will be the chief guest.
