‘Barroz’ box office: Mohanlal’s directorial debut reportedly earns Rs. 3.6 crores on opening day
The 3D fantasy film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 100 crores
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Malayalam version of superstar Mohanlal’s directorial debut, Barroz, has reportedly opened to Rs 3.6 crores at the box office on Christmas day. Considering the 3D fantasy film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 100 crores, the meagre opening at the box office and the largely negative reviews from the critics are in deed concerning.
The Rs 3.6 crore figure, as reported by Sacnilk, is less than that of Malakottai Vaaliban, Mohanlal’s film with Lijo Jose Pellissery, which opened earlier this year at Rs 5.6 crores.
One can blame poor release planning from the makers for the performance since Barroz is unfortunately facing heat from quite a few biggies in the pan-India arena: Pushpa 2: The Rule, Mufasa: The Lion King, Baby John, UI, and Max.
Even on its home turf, the film is competing with Unni Mukundan’s Marco, which has grossed over Rs. 42 crores worldwide since its release on December 20. Aasiq Abu’s Rifle Club, thanks to largely positive reviews from critics, has also been taking some space at the Kerala box office.
Barroz has a script written by Jijo Punnoose of My Dear Kuttichathan (1984) fame, which is based on his novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure.
The film has music scored by Lydian Nadhaswaram. Hollywood composer Mark Kilian, known for working on films like Deep Blue Sea 3 and Pitch Perfect, has composed the background score. The film has cinematography by Santosh Sivan and editing by B Ajith Kumar.
Backed by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas, the film was released in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
Meanwhile, Mohanlal will also be seen in Empuraan, the sequel of the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. Directed by Prithviraj, the movie is set to hit the screens on March 27, 2025.
