Thiruvananthapuram one of the five cities to host Wim Wenders’s India tour in February
A retrospective of Wenders’s major films will take place in the presence of the filmmaker, who is one of the pioneers of the New German Cinema of the 1970s and winner of the Palme D’Or, the Golden Lion, among others.
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduKerala’s capital city will be one of the five stopovers for legendary German filmmaker Wim Wenders during his maiden Indian visit in February. The visit is part of ‘Wim Wenders – King of the Road – The India Tour’ organised by the Film Heritage Foundation, in association with the Wim Wenders Foundation, the Max Mueller Bhavan Thiruvananthapuram and the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC).
A retrospective of Wenders’s major films will take place in the presence of the filmmaker, who has won the Palme D’Or, the Golden Lion, and the BAFTA, and was nominated for the Academy Awards several times. One of the pioneers of the New German Cinema of the 1970s, his works include feature and documentary films, photo exhibitions, photo books and film books.
Some of his acclaimed works include Paris, Texas (1984), Wings of Desire (1987), The Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Pina (2011) and the recent Perfect Days (2023), for which lead actor Koji Yakusho received the award for Best Actor at Cannes.
The extensive India retrospective will showcase the auteur’s astonishing range of films spanning a career of more than half a century. A total of 18 of his films – features, short films and documentaries – from his earliest feature film The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick (1971), to his latest 3D documentary Anselm (2023) will be screened in five cities – Mumbai, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata and Delhi – from February 5 to February 22. The screenings are open to the general public on a first come, first served basis.
The multi-city retrospective will witness Mr. Wenders, who is famous for his road movies, travel across the country presenting his films at public events as well as in engagements with film students and the film community. In Thiruvananthapuram, the screenings will be at the Kairali theatre complex on February 10 and 11.
