Chunchanakatte, located near K.R. Nagar town in Mysuru district, is gearing up to host Jalapatotsava on November 30 and December 1.

The Cauvery river meanders and drops from a height of about 20 meters and flows amidst the rocky terrain making Chunchanakatte an attractive destination for visitors. The place has a temple dedicated to Lord Kodandarama, and a lot of devotees from Mysuru and nearby places visit the temple. Chunchanakatte is also famous for cattle fairs. The Rathotsava at the temple in January every year attracts devotees from various parts of the state.

Known for its scenic waterfalls that come alive during the monsoon, Chunchankatte has been hosting Jalapatotsava since the last few years to drive tourism in the region. Arrangements for ‘Dhanushkoti Cauvery Jalapata Utsav’ are underway and the officials are hoping that the event will attract tourists.

The waterfall festival is being organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, Kannada and Culture, and Tourism departments.

Minister in-charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa will inaugurate the event on November 30 at 6.30 p.m.

Giving details of the event at a press conference here on Wednesday, K.R. Nagar MLA D. Ravishankar said special illumination will be done from K.R. Nagar to Saligrama and also to Sri Rama Temple beside the waterfalls to mark the occasion, and create a festive ambience.

He said entertainment and cultural programmes will be organised.

In the evening of the inaugural day, there will be a folk music programme from singer Basavaiah and team. K Rameshwarappa and team will also present Kannada Dindima folk music at 5 p.m. At 7.30 p.m., singer Raghu Dixit and team will present a music concert.

U. Rajesh Pediyar and Rashmi from Chikmagalur will present a folk music programme – songs of noted singer C. Ashwath at 4.30 p.m. on December 1. This will be followed by sandalwood music by actors Nimika Ratnakara and Priyanka at 7.30 p.m. and a concert by music composer and singer Manikant Kadri and Hansika Iyer later in the evening.

The authorities have been asked to share the information on the event with schools and colleges so that students can participate. The Health Department has also been asked to organise a health camp so that the visitors can make use of the facility for a health check-up.

A few days ago, during a meeting in connection with the event, the deputy commissioner had asked the taluk officers to fill up potholes on the road from K.R. Nagar to Chunchanakatte given the event. A grand stage has to be put up for the programmes, and cleanliness must be prioritised. Despite having the potential and being surrounded by some tourist sites, the place lacks facilities for tourists. A few years ago, the Tourism Department had planned to develop a facility for adventure sports at the place. However, nothing was done and the place continues to lack infrastructure needed for increasing the footfall.
