The Thripunithura municipal authorities on Thursday seized two electric motor pumps allegedly used in violation of norms to discharge untreated sewage generated at an apartment complex at Kaniyampuzha near Eroor.

The joint action by the civic body and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) was carried out at Shwas Mystic Heights apartment complex for non-compliance with directives to stop illegal discharge of untreated wastewater into the nearby drain and land.

Municipal secretary Subhash P.K. said the action was taken in accordance with Section 340 of the Kerala Municipality Act that prohibited throwing filth or debris into public places. Legal measures will be taken against the violators. The two towers at the complex had a total of over 120 apartments, he added.

Sreelakshmi P.B., environmental engineer at the PCB, said the action was taken under the provisions of Section 33 A (power to give directions) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. Inspections revealed that the common sewage treatment plant was not functioning as per norms. Motor pumps were used to collect water from the collection tank, and the untreated wastewater was found being discharged into the nearby drain and land, she added. Notices have been served on the builder and the association of apartment owners for the alleged violations.

Meanwhile, association representatives in Tower 1 said the builder had not yet transferred the common space, where the sewage treatment plant (STP) is located, to the association. The builder was not available for comment. However, the PCB authorities said the builder had given a letter claiming that he had completed the handing over proceedings though it needed to be ascertained legally.
