It’s been 34 years since the iconic movie Home Alone was released, and fans are still finding ‘plot holes’ to this day. Every year, the film resurfaces on screens and the theories start once again. This year, fans have gone back to the first movie, and have started to question why a major part in the blockbuster was never mentioned again in the sequels.

In the first film, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is left behind when his family head off to Paris for the holidays. Chaos then erupted in the form of two burglars who Kevin manages to ‘fight off’ with wild traps set around the home. However, fans have now spotted that in the second film, Kevin doesn’t actually mention the huge event, and just alludes to the fact he was left at home.

Taking to Reddit, one fan stated: “All throughout the second film, his family only ever describes him as being left alone during Christmas—never once do they refer to the fact that he fought off two thieves while he was home alone. The only witness to Kevin fighting the thieves was the old man with the snow shovel. One would think that he would have discussed the ordeal with Kevin’s parents.”

Fans question why one key scene in the first movie was never mentioned again

The fan then questioned why Kevin and his neighbour withheld the information from his family. “A plot hole? Or, alternatively, is there a possibility that Kevin hallucinated the entire events of the first and second films?” they questioned.

Other fans then continued to offer their suggestions, as one wrote: “ Kevin does tell his family, but no one believes him would be my explanation for that one.” Another suggested the film had already addressed he’d be keeping the events as secret as they penned: “I felt this was addressed when they asked Kevin what he was up to and he said not much just hung around. It showed he was going to keep it a secret.”

“It bothers me that Kevin managed to clean and repair the entire house leaving behind no evidence, except somehow the gold tooth is found by his dad in the living room,” another wrote on the forum.

Home Alone became a phenomenon worldwide, and is still widely watched during the festive season almost four decades later. There are now six Home Alone movies, being released between 1990-2021.

Despite still being the face of the movies to this day, , Macaulay Culkin left the franchise after 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
