Bodies of twin sisters who died in UK river taken home in backpack
Hungarian sisters Eliza and Henrietta Huszti died in the River Dee in Aberdeen in January last year, and now their brother József Huszti said their family 'still can't process it'
by Chiara Fiorillo, Gemma Ryder · The MirrorThe bodies of tragic twin sisters who died in a river in Scotland were flown to their home country in a backpack as their family couldn't afford coffins.
Henrietta and Eliza Huszti, both 32, went missing in the early hours of January 7, 2025, in a case that grabbed national headlines. Their bodies were later recovered from the river near where they were last seen on January 31, with both death certificates recording drowning as the cause of death.
In a moving interview with Hungarian media outlet Bors, their brother József Huszti said the family is still struggling with the loss and with the practical and financial aftermath of the tragedy. He said: "It was the hardest time last year. We had to go to the place where they were found.
"We went to their flat, where their clothes and belongings were still there. We had to arrange the cremation because we didn't have enough money to bring them home in coffins."
József said the cost of transporting the sisters home to Hungary in coffins would have been around £45,000, which the family couldn't afford. Instead, he said they carried the sisters' urns in their backpacks, the Daily Record reports.
He added: "We still can't process it. This is a very difficult time for us, all the family members have been commemorating, we have lit candles and put up their photos. This is the first anniversary, which is very painful."
