As Christmas cost soar, festive days out don't have to break the bank and we've rounded up the best free activities across England, perfect for all looking to soak up the magic without spending a penny
Set along the Thames with views of Tower Bridge, Winter by the River is one of London’s biggest free festive events, running from mid-November through to early January. Fleet Street Quarter has welcomed a very special guest this year - a Snoopy trail. A nostalgic treat for parents, the Christmas event - which sees 12 sculptures designed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts strip placed around the area - also offers a festive journey for kids. The trail offers magical views of London, lit up with Christmas decorations. Ramsgate’s Winter Festival is packed with free festive activities and runs through to January 25. Highlights include the Light Up Ramsgate trail, which winds through the town and harbour, and the Royal Harbour boat illuminations, transforming the waterfront into a glowing Christmas display. Families can also take part in a free Elf Trail, with children receiving a gift at Santa’s grotto on selected days. Each evening between 4pm and 10pm, the town centre becomes a walkable festive gallery. Lantern-making workshops, community parades including a New Year lantern event, live music, performances, Christmas markets and late-night shopping are all part of the programme. From late November, Prior Park brings The 12 Days of Christmas to life with a themed festive trail through its gardens. Families can follow the route, spotting installations inspired by the classic carol while enjoying winter walks around the lakes and the beautifully decorated Palladian bridge. The trail runs on weekends in December and daily during the school holidays, excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This year Bristol’s Christmas market returns to the city centre, transforming Broadmead into a magical festive hub filled with seasonal decorations and cheerful stalls.
