Strictly Come Dancing has booted off its ninth star after last night's Musicals Week quarter-final, with fans outraged by the controversial result. Tonight's show saw Amber Davies and Lewis Cope land in the bottom two, making Amber the only person in Strictly history to receive a 40 and be in the dance-off at this stage in the competition.

After both couples danced for a second time, the judges unanimously chose to save Amber and Nikita. They topped the leaderboard on Saturday night with their Charleston to Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat from Guys and Dolls.

Speaking to Tess after being eliminated, Lewis said: "It's been more than I could have ever wished for. If someone would have said that I'd have done 11 weeks on the show at the beginning, I'd have been over the moon and snap their hand off.

"So, thank you to the full show, to everyone for having a space where people can be themselves, grow, learn, express themselves. It's been incredible and a memory that I'll have for the rest of my life, and [to Katya] I think it's all down to you.

"You've literally given me absolutely everything I could wish for as a friend, as a teacher, and yeah, I couldn't imagine it with anybody else. So, thank you very much."

A tearful Katya added: "I think you have created so many moments for Strictly Come Dancing that will be in the history books and you will be remembered as one of, if not, the best male celebrity we've ever had on the show, but also you will be remembered for being an incredible person you are.

"Kind and genuine people still exist - what a gentleman you are, so humble and so kind. And I'm so glad that we had a chance to see you and showcase your talent and what a beautiful person you are to the world. Thank you.

Viewers have been left gobsmacked by the result, with Lewis having been a front-runner for the final earlier in the competition. "#Strictly is done. It's an absolute joke," one viewer wrote. "The best dancer ever in its history doesn't even make the Final! JOKE!"

Another said: "Not interested anymore. I only watched it for Lewis. I find the others boring." A third tweeted: "I just watched Katya and Lewis's salsa. It was like a scene from Westside Story.

"He the best dancer ever on this show I don't care if he has danced before some people could have a 1000 lessons and never be able to dance. It's an absolute travesty he has gone."

After last night's show, Amber took to Instagram to hit out at critics after some viewers complained about her past dance experience.

The ex Love Island star is a trained musical theatre actress, having starred in West End shows of The Great Gatsby, Back to the Future: The Musical and 9 to 5: The Musical. Writing on her Instagram story earlier today, Amber said: "Guys, please.. it's really is just a television show.

"I wasn't even supposed to be in the comp. You have non idea what we put our mind and body through for this experience.. I'm really just trying my best with the opportunity that came to me. To anyone who has left a NICE comment thank you. Xx."

Alongside the message, she wrote: "The meanies are out to play. Please be kind."

Four couples are heading into next week's semi-final after tonight: Amber, EastEnders' Balvinder Sopal, social media star George Clarke and ex footballer Karen Carney.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6:35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
