The Official Chart's Christmas Number One is here! Kylie Minogue has been announced as the top single of 2025's festive period. This comes after two straight years of Wham!'s Last Christmas nabbing the title.

The announcement was made on BBC Radio 1 and the Official Charts Company. The winner was chosen based on single sales and streams between December 12 and 18. The song has secured Kylie her eighth number one single and has made her the only female artist to have had UK Number 1's in four different decades.

XMAS is also the first Amazon Music Number One to reach the official top spot. Kylie said: "It’s hard to put into words how special this feels. Being Christmas Number One really is the most wonderful gift! I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been listening and sharing the love and I’m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!"

The race for this year's Christmas Number One was hard to call, as several songs were pipped to take the top spot in the Christmas Top 40. This included Kylie Minogue's latest Christmas song, XMAS, which came 25 years after her iconic take on Santa Baby. XMAS, which came with a viral YMCA-esque dance.

Other contenders included Wham!, whose hit Christmas song made another strong ploy for the top spot, Loose Women's Denise Welch, who released a song called Slayyy Bells, and charity single Lullaby, from Together For Palestine.

The Official Charts Company also did not discount non-festive tracks from their potential list of Christmas Number Ones. They listed Raye's Where Is My Husband, a top choice thanks to its popularity on TikTok, two Olivia Dean songs - So Easy and Man I Need - and two by Taylor Swift - The Fate Of Ophelia and Opalite.

Before Wham! came to dominate the Christmas charts, LadBaby spent several years in the top spot with their food-based takes on classic songs. From 2018 to 2022, the YouTube sensations' songs, such as I Love Sausage Rolls and Don't Stop Me Eatin', seemed like shoe-ins for the Number One.

For a long time, the Christmas Number One was dominated by X Factor winners. Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Matt Cardle and Sam Bailey all had Number Ones.

The Official Charts started awarding a Christmas Number One to the top single of the festive week in 1952, when it went to Al Martino's Here In My Heart.

Some iconic Christmas Number Ones include The Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand in 1963, Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody in 1973, The Human League's Don't You Want Me in 1981, and Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? in 1984 and Spice Girls 2 Become 1 in 1996.
