The funeral of Gary "Mani" Mounfield, bassist with legendary Manchester band The Stone Roses takes place today.

The Manchester-born star, who also played with Primal Scream, died last month at the age of 63. Mourners are starting to gather at Manchester Cathedral and are lining the streets for the funeral cortege, which leaves from Heaton Moor at 10am ahead of the funeral service.

Mounfield was part of The Stone Roses’ classic line-up alongside singer Brown, guitarist John Squire and drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren. He worked on the Manchester band’s well-known 1989 self-titled debut album, which featured hits such as I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums and I Am The Resurrection, which is underpinned by his prowling bassline, and its harder-rocking 1994 follow-up Second Coming.

'R Kid'

A moving floral tribute reading 'R Kid' was seen besides the coffin of the Stone Roses' legend as the funeral procession made its way through the streets of Manchester today.

The coffin was adorned with the same background as the band's debut album, released in 1989.

Fans were seen clapping the procession as it proceeded on to Manchester cathedral.
