by Talya Honebeek · The MirrorWith the weather getting steadily colder and the clocks just about to go back, those who want to travel can choose between jetting off in search of some winter sun or embracing the chill with a cosy autumnal UK staycation.
Northumberland, England's northernmost county, is home to some popular staycation spots, with the quiet village of Corbridge and Bamburgh, the UK's "best seaside resort", among the highlights.
Another great place to visit is Alnwick, a "fairytale" market town that serves as an ideal base for exploring Northumberland.
Alnwick is steeped in history, dating back to the 7th century. The town, which was once a traditional market town that served as a staging point on the Great North Road in the 18th and 19th centuries, flourished thanks to the construction of Alnwick Castle, an imposing medieval fortress that overlooks the River Aln.
To protect against Scottish raids, a high wall was built around the town with four gateways, two of which are still standing today. One, Pottergate Tower, has even been transformed into a luxury holiday rental, giving visitors a unique look across the castle.
Speaking of the castle, fans of the Harry Potter film series may think it feels rather familiar. That's because Alnwick Castle was used as a filming location for both the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets.
Harry and his classmates learnt to fly broomsticks on the Outer Bailey, which is where Harry also took his first steps to becoming a Quidditch player. Walking around the castle's courtyards and baileys, you'll also be able to spot the backdrop for many scenes of Harry, Ron and Hermione walking to class, Hagrid's hut and the Forbidden Forest.
Another highlight of the town is Alnwick Gardens, a contemporary garden with everything from water features and a bamboo labyrinth to treetop walkways and a separate garden full of deadly plants.
It also plays host to the world's biggest treehouse. The 6,000sqft structure, simply named The Treehouse, serves as an atmospheric restaurant and wedding venue, with rope bridges, fairy lights and handcrafted chairs and tables.
And if you fancy even more history, you can go on to explore more of Hadrian's Wall further north, too. Hexham, its Abbey and old Gaol are just a mile west of Corbridge, while Aydon Castle lies just one mile outside of the village.
