The devil wears Chanel, actually
By Courtney Thompson
Anna Wintour has arrived in, what else, a Chanel haute couture gown and ruffled feather cape by Matthieu Blazy.
The former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Wintour now serves as chief creative officer and artistic director of Condé Nast and has overseen the Gala since 1995. Under her guardianship, it’s become a global phenomenon and incredibly effective fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute (they’ve raised over $US300 million to date).
If anyone thought she was about to cede control of the event to Chloe Malle, the new head of editorial content at Vogue, you’re sorely mistaken.
Wintour has now worn Chanel 16 times over the years, favouring the French house even when the event was in celebration of another designer’s work.
She paired the look with her signature black shades and Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery. Notably, she did not accessorise with her “close friend” (rumoured boyfriend) Billy Nighy this year. The pair walked arm in arm down the carpet in 2023. Perhaps he’s waiting for her inside?
