The Long Dark: Iron Road is the next big DLC from Hinterland Studio for its immersive survival adventure. Iron Road expands upon Survival Mode with new areas full of new opportunities, and players will be able to get a taste of what Cauldron Island has to offer as the DLC enters early access at the end of the month.

Hinterland Studio announced The Long Dark: Iron Road on YouTube, social media and its website with a Steam page going up as well. The new territory, Cauldron Island, is an abandoned land mass of once-bustling machinery, featuring over 100km of train track and the remnants of a whaling industry. You’ll restore an old train with which to better explore the new land and make discoveries which promise to “change how you survive in this Aurora-bathed world, forever.” The DLC will come to Steam Early Access starting on October 27, 2026. The base version of The Long Dark will be required to play Iron Road, even in early access.

Hinterland Studio has been preparing Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 at least since 2024 when it was officially revealed at The Game Awards. However, Hinterland has stressed that it’s not leaving the original The Long Dark in the snow to focus on the new game, and this looks like a substantial delivery on that claim. The Long Dark 2 was supposed to come in 2026 and has currently been pushed back to 2027.

Hinterland intends to complete The Long Dark: Iron Road’s early access roadmap in about “18 to 24 months.” You can wishlist the DLC now. Stay tuned to The Long Dark topic for more news an updates.
