Paranormal Activity: Threshold has been canceled

IP holder Paramount denied a request to extend the game's development.

DarkStone Digital has announced that development of Paranormal Activity: Threshold will come to an end. This decision comes after the studio failed to receive a development extension.

Brian Clarke, the solo developer and founder of DarkStone Digital, announced the cancelation of his game in a social media post. “It’s no secret that game development means constant change and challenges especially as a solo indie,” he wrote. “It became clear that the game needed more time to ensure it was the best it could possibly be.” Clarke says that with this in mind, he and publisher DreadXP made a request to Paramount for a time extension, and that Paramount denied the request.

After Paramount denied the extension, Clarke says he was faced with two decisions: “Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways.” Clarke chose to walk away and end development on the game.

Paranormal Activity: Threshold was set to be Clarke’s follow-up to The Mortuary Assistant, an indie horror hit that spawned a film adaptation. I played a demo of Paranormal Activity: Threshold at PAX East and thought it was the scariest game at the show.

Clarke says that he may take some time away, but plans to return to horror in the future.
