Shack Chat: Which unannounced character do you want to see in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie launching next week and surprising characters being revealed, we opine on who we still want to see.

by · Shacknews

The Super Mario Galaxy movie looks to be filled to the brim with deep cuts. It’s not just Mario 2, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy content making it in, but also characters from other IP, as Star Fox hero Fox McCloud was just officially confirmed. How much could there be left to say? We’re not sure, but we still have some opinions on what surprise characters we’d like to see in the mix, so without further ado, here’s our latest Shack Chat.

Question: Which unannounced character do you want to see in The Super Mario Galaxy  Movie?

Smithy - Ozzie Mejia, Senior Filer of Things That'll Never Happen

Source: Nintendo

I like that Mario exists in a lot of different universes. He lives in the prime platformer universe, which is what these movies are all based on, at least for the time being. He lives in the sports universe, where everybody gets together for some friendly scrimmages. He exists in the kart racing universe, which got its time to shine in the first movie, but doesn't look to be coming back for a second round so far. Then there's the RPG universe, which is where some of the deepest Mario narratives reside.

So, if we're looking for deep cuts, let me propose the deepest cut. I would like a post-credits scene teasing an adaptation of Super Mario RPG. Show me Smithy threatening to take over the world and forcing Mario and Bowser to join forces. I'm a sicko. I want to see this badly. It'll never happen, but I can dream.

Phanto - TJ Denzer, Senior Skedaddler When Phanto Goes Live

Source: Nintendo

My foremost memory of Super Mario Bros. 2 is an anxious one. You go down a vase, dig through the sand to get a key, and you see it there in the middle: that smiling mask just idling quietly and doing no harm. Until, of course, you grab the key. Then, it’s time to run for your life. That’s Phanto, and it will hunt you to the end of the level for your crimes.

Phanto is terrifying. As far as I remember, it’s invincible, and the only way to defeat it is to escape it or not wake it. Its relentless pursuit of the player who takes its keys was the source of many a game over suffered at its direct hands or running for my life from it. And you know what? I don’t think it would take much to translate to a scene where someone in Mario’s crew needs to grab a cursed object from a cramped space, only to see the deadly approach of Phanto as it comes to collect its due for their thievery. And based on all the Super Mario 2 stuff we’ve been seeing in this film? Yeah, I feel confident about this one.

Captain Falcon - Asif Khan, Senior Mute City Reporter, Best in the Universe

Now that R.O.B. and Fox McCloud have been announced as characters in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, I am going to push for the once great SNES mascot Captain Falcon to make an appearance in the film. Maybe even a quick look at Falcon having lunch at a ramen shop with his pal Kirby?

Morton - Bill Lavoy, Shackmaps Overlord

Source: Nintendo

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will have lots of cute and cuddly characters, so I’m going to choose someone who is intimidating and terrifying. Just kidding, that’s not possible. All characters are cute, even when they are part of the dreaded Koopa Troop. But Morton stands out to me immediately as a character that I think could really bring some spice to the movie.

MIPS - Sam Chandler, Stargazer

This little yellow rabbit caused me all sorts of problems when I was a kid. He’s so agile! I had to really focus up in order to grab him and earn my Power Star. And then I had to do it again! I think seeing Mario get outfoxed by MIPS in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie would be a great callback.

Falco Lombardi - Dennis White Jr., Fly Falco Fly!

Since we know Mr. McCloud is showing up in the film already, I want to see his edgy righthand man pull up to help out on this adventure too. I envision a Captain America and Winter Soldier type of situation with Falco being more of the hothead compared to Fox McCloud with their best friend dynamic played up for good comedic timing. If there’s an epic space battle going down during this film, I think that it looks cooler with the entire Star Fox team pulling up, but if we only get part of the team, give me Falco! I also wouldn’t mind Peppy playing the grizzled vet on comms, too. The harder question for me is who would Falco’s voice actor be?

Waluigi - Donovan Erskine, New Donk City Reporter

Waluigi is the ultimate crowd pleaser. Imagine the cheers and claps when that guy unexpectedly pops onto the screen on opening night. It’d be like the finale of Avengers: Endgame. I need this guy to find his way into this movie. Please.

Mr. L - Steve Tyminski, Nintendo still won’t cast me as a voice in one of these!

Which unannounced character do I want to see in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? This is such a loaded question because there are so many directions I could take this. If Chain Chomp wasn’t already shown off in a trailer and eaten by Yoshi, that would have been my answer. With all the Yoshi love shown, it would be really cool to see Boshi from Mario RPG come back. I’m also interested in seeing how deep the Mario Bros 2 lore goes. We have already seen quite a few villains from Mario 2 but we haven’t seen Fry Guy. I used Fry Guy as an image for a few social media channels back in the day. BUT I think for this question, I’m going with an outside the box answer. I’m going with Mr. L from Super Paper Mario. Luigi could help Rosalina without Mario knowing in the movie by dressing up in his Mr. L getup. If not Fry Guy, I’d love to see Mr. L get some love. Also, honorable mention to Geno and Mallow as it feels like this Mario movie is giving the fans some deep cuts.

These are our answers,  but is there a holdout character you’re hoping to see in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Let us know in the comments and have a great weekend!
