400 Attend Tribute to Rabbi Shmully Altein in Winnipeg
More than 400 family members, friends, community members, and those whose lives were touched by Rabbi Shmuly Altein obm gathered for a moving Shloshim event, celebrating the life and enduring legacy of the beloved shliach and educator.

More than 400 family members, friends, community members, and those whose lives were touched by Rabbi Shmuly Altein OBM gathered for a moving Shloshim event, celebrating the life and enduring legacy of the beloved shliach and educator.
Rabbi Altein, who passed away on Gimmel Tammuz at the age of 43 after a lengthy illness, dedicated his life to strengthening Jewish life in Winnipeg, Canada, alongside his wife, Adina.
Raised on shlichus in Winnipeg, he returned there after his marriage to establish and expand educational programs, including the city’s Lubavitch Jewish Learning Centre, inspiring countless Jews with his warmth, sincerity, and unwavering love for every individual. In recent years, the family relocated to Wesley Hills, New York, where he continued teaching and uplifting others despite his illness.
Reflecting on the evening, organizers wrote: “With hearts full and eyes still wet, we want to say thank you. Thank you to over 400 people who came to the Shloshim event l’ilui nishmat Rabbi Shmuly.”
They described an atmosphere in which “anyone who was in the room could feel the love, the appreciation, and the longing for Rabbi Shmuly,” adding that every attendee “felt like close family, like a best friend.”
The gathering brought together many of the people Rabbi Shmuly and Adina had inspired throughout the years, giving them an opportunity to reconnect with the light and kindness that defined his life and shlichus.
The Alteins’ five children, Mussie, JJ, Sruly, Goldie, and Yossi, each spoke with heartfelt words which left a lasting impression on those in attendance.
“Through the tears that were shed on this special evening, we all walked out uplifted and strengthened — in Rabbi Shmuly’s own special, love-filled way; to keep seeing what’s special and unique in each one around us, to keep adding light — so much light — to the world,” the organizers shared.
