The sound echoed through the quiet hotel room in Vienna. The Frierdiker Rebbe looked up from the sefer he was learning. It was a sunny afternoon, and his father, the Rebbe Rashab, was out on a walk. They had come to Vienna so the Rebbe Rashab could consult with doctors, and no one was expected.
He closed the sefer, crossed the room, and pulled open the heavy wooden door.
A delivery man stood in the hallway. He wore a neat uniform with the name of an elegant women’s clothing store stitched on it, and he looked a little out of place in front of a room where a chassidishe Yid sat learning. In his arms he held a large package, beautifully wrapped and tied with a shiny satin ribbon.
“A delivery,” he said, and held out a small note.
The Frierdiker Rebbe recognized the handwriting right away. It was his father’s: “Please pay the delivery man 25 crowns.”
Women’s clothing? From an elegant shop in Vienna? Who was it for?
Only a few days later, in a small town far from Vienna, was the answer revealed.
