Following the horrific terror attack in Sydney, Chabad institutions in Hungary decided to increase light. As part of this effort, the “Mitzvah Tank” — which has been operating regularly in Budapest since its launch a year ago — set out on a special tour throughout all the days of Chanukah to outlying cities across the country, in order to reach individual Jews living without an active community or synagogue.

The activity was led by the shaliach Rabbi Motti Bak together with five temimim from the new Tomchei Tmimim yeshiva that opened this year in northern Hungary.

According to Rabbi Bak, “We reached hundreds of Jews using addresses registered with the Association of Torah-Observant Jewish Communities in Hungary (EMIH), including locations hundreds of kilometers from Budapest. The reactions were very moving.”

At the same time, as in previous years, 10 Chanukah events were held in the capital city of Budapest — including central public menorah lightings throughout the city — with the participation of thousands.

Hungary’s Chief Rabbi, the shaliach Rabbi Shlomo Köves, said: “Wherever they try to darken, we increase the light.”
