KOTA KINABALU (Oct 12): Seven students from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) managed to have their feature articles published in an English language magazine of an educational institution in Indonesia, STKIP PGRI Pacitan, on the latest issue in which the theme was heroes.

The magazine, known as E-Magz, can be accessed via this link: https://pbi.stkippacitan.ac.id/e-magazine/#flipbook-df_902/1/.

These seven students represented all four student cohorts at the college. They are Ilhan Ziqry Azimie, Nurbatrisyia Shariff, AD Azwanwell Sabudin, Thiery Christian Thomas, Jeovahn PJ Ape, Sandra Elysa Saimon, and Verraneeta Fobian.

Each of them shared their thoughts on what defines a hero and who they consider to be their hero.

Ilhan’s article was named the best for how it argues that heroes are those who work in emergency services such as doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters and volunteers who are willing to sacrifice their time, energy, and money to help those in need.

Four of the students namely Nurbatrisyia, AD Azwanwell, Jeovahn and Sandra wrote about their parents, whom they view as their heroes. Thiery highlighted an inventor as a hero for his groundbreaking technology while Verraneeta discussed the general definition of a hero.

A feature article presents a subject by analyzing facts and sharing a narrative or specific information about the subject and it can cover a wide range of topics such as events, individuals, lifestyles, places, and more.

These students successfully wrote their feature articles in English with the assistance of their teacher who served as their editor and mentor. They then submitted their finalized articles to the magazine, which accepted and published them for the August–October issue. The magazine is published once every two months.

The college director, Nordin bin Akup, congratulated the students for showcasing the ability of school or college students in writing and publishing magazine articles. He expressed optimism about this practice as it helps develop students’ language, writing and critical thinking skills. He hopes that more students will become involved in writing.
