Abd Karim: Vital to position Sarawak as leading craft tourism destination
by Desiree David · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Nov 27): It is vital to position Sarawak as a leading craft tourism destination, said Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said with the BorneoCraft Global Expo and Conference 2024 (BCG2024), which began today, the state can create a thriving ecosystem that enhances and promotes the craftsmanship of local artisans.
“With this expo, we not only aim to elevate the standards of craft but also to foster collaboration and innovation among artists, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders.
“We believe that by working together, we can nurture a vibrant environment where creativity flourishes and where our crafts can compete globally,” said Abdul Karim at the BCG2024 launch at Waterfront Esplanade here today.
He said Sarawak is dedicated to investing in craft communities by providing tools, training, and resources to enhance their skills, promote their work, and foster pride in local artisans, ensuring the state’s culture remains vibrant and relevant.
“Let this event serve as a launching pad for future initiatives—the beginning of an inspiring journey that ushers in a new chapter for Sarawak’s arts and crafts landscape.
“Together, we will position Sarawak not only as a hub for craft but also as a destination where visitors can engage with our rich culture and take home a piece of our heritage,” he said.
Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts and BCG2024 organising chairman Datuk Snowdan Lawan emphasised the event’s focus on fostering young talent and sustainable practices.
In his welcoming speech, he said the event was more than just an exhibition as it is a testament to the depth of Sarawak’s cultural heritage, the boundless creativity of its artisans, and their shared ambition to foster a thriving, sustainable craft ecosystem here in Sarawak.
“The creative talents represented here today are the lifeblood of our cultural identity. As we chart our path forward, it is crucial to nurture these talents and empower the next generation of craftsmen and women,” he said.
“By embracing the traditions that define us while equipping ourselves for the global marketplace, we can secure a vibrant future for Sarawak’s craft sector.”
Snowdan urged youths to view craftsmanship not only as a bridge to their past but as an exciting avenue for entrepreneurship.
“With innovation and digital tools at our disposal, Sarawak is well-positioned to bring its unique offerings to the global stage, establishing our presence within the international craft community.”
He also announced the launch of the MasterCraft Challenge to discover and promote exceptional talent within Sarawak’s craft communities.
