by Aileen Yap · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Nov 1): World-renowned Malaysian couture shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo arrived in Kuching today for a three-day visit, expressing excitement about experiencing the city’s unique charm firsthand.
In an exclusive interview with The Borneo Post, Choo shared that while this is his second visit to Kuching, he didn’t have the chance to explore the city previously.
Now, he looks forward to soaking in Kuching’s distinctive culture, relaxed atmosphere, and potential as an emerging tourism hotspot.
“Kuching is very peaceful, the food here is also very affordable,” Choo said during the interview at the Waterfront Hotel today.
He noted that Kuching holds substantial potential as a tourist destination, observing that people have yet to discover the beauty of Kuching.
Choo also highlighted the charm of Carpenter Street, likening it to Penang’s old streets where he hails from, and expressed a particular fondness for local cuisine, especially Sarawak Laksa.
When asked about the famous “Laksa debate”, Choo diplomatically remarked that both Sarawak and Penang Laksas “are each special in their own way”.
Reflecting on Kuching’s untapped tourism potential, Choo expressed optimism that increased exposure would attract more visitors.
He believes that Kuching’s cultural richness, artistry, and culinary offerings make it a promising tourist spot and hopes that more people will discover it.
“I believe Kuching will grow into a famous tourist destination, with more people drawn here by its rich culture, art, and cuisine,” he said.
He plans to explore the city further and hinted that he intends to return more frequently, charmed by the peace and tranquility it offers.
“So I think I’ll come back more often after this because I think this place is really good.
“I also hope later if I have time, I want to walk around the beautiful city, as Kuching is truly a good place to come relax, have fun and have a vacation,” he said.
Choo also commended Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision for Sarawak’s progress, highlighting the state government’s initiatives such as the new airport terminal and educational projects.
“The state government is really investing in youth education here, which is so promising for future growth and development,” he said.
