In Miri, Indonesian jailed 3 days, fined RM850 for having illegal lottery ticket
by Jacqueline Raphael · Borneo Post OnlineMIRI (Nov 27): A foreign man was sentenced today to three days in jail and fined RM850 in default two weeks in prison for possessing an illegal lottery ticket.
Slamin Kaden, 48, from Sampang, Indonesia pleaded guilty before Magistrate Sandy Yvette Freddy after the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 was read to him.
The Section provides for up to six months’ imprisonment or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.
Based on facts of the case, Slamin, who works as a carpenter, was arrested by police after he was found in possession of a piece of paper with numbers written on it, believed to be an illegal lottery ticket.
He committed the offence at a lot on Jalan Desa Senadin 1A near here at around 6.45pm on Nov 24, 2024.
In mitigation, the married father-of-three pleaded for a light sentence as this was his first offence.
Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman handled the prosecution, while Slamin was unrepresented.
