Man in Sibu charged with cheating, theft against two senior citizens

SIBU (Oct 30): A senior citizen was charged in the Magistrates’ Court here today with one count of cheating and one count of theft against two other senior citizens.

No plea was recorded from Dahlan Wong, 64, after the charges were read to him before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern.

On the first charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Dahlan allegedly cheated a 70-year-old man by deceiving the latter into believing that he had a land rental agreement from Sibu Water Board, thus dishonestly inducing the victim to deliver RM15,000 to avoid paying land taxes and a documentation fee.

The offence allegedly took place at a bank here at about 1pm on Aug 22, 2024.

On the second charge framed under Section 378 of Penal Code and punishable under Section 379 of the same Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code, Dahlan and two others still at large allegedly stole RM10,000 from another 70-year-old man at a bank here at around 12.51pm on Aug 26, 2024.

The accused was allowed bail of RM10,000 for the first charge, and RM8,000 for the second charge, with two sureties each.

The court also fixed Nov 26, 2024 for further case mention.

ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari appeared for the prosecution, while Dahlan was unrepresented.

Meanwhile, in a separate courtroom before Magistrate Romario Jonoi, Dahlan was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code with deceiving a 54-year-old woman in a non-existent land rental agreement.

No plea was recorded.

He allegedly dishonestly induced the woman to deliver RM7,000 on the promise that he would give her a cheque for RM150,000 and documentation fee.

The court allowed him to be released on undeposited bond bail of RM3,000 with two local sureties.

The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Aiman Zarith Zahrullail.
