Journalist released after 14 days in detention
by Ethiopia Observer · Ethiopia ObserverEthiopian journalist Salsawit Baynesagn, who had been detained without charge for 14 days, was released on Saturday, according to her youngest sister, Haymanot Baynesagn.
Police arrested Baynesagn at her home in Addis Ababa on June 8 after informing her that she was wanted for questioning. Since her detention, she had not appeared before a court, and authorities had not disclosed any charges or specific allegations against her.
Baynesagn, an independent journalist active on TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, had reportedly been held incommunicado during her detention. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Friday that her detention without charge and failure to bring her before a court violated her due process rights.
Her arrest comes amid growing concerns over press freedom in Ethiopia, where local and international rights groups say authorities have intensified pressure on independent journalists and media outlets in recent months.
