When, Where, and If 'Megalopolis' Will Be Available to Stream

Where is Megalopolis streaming?

· Cosmopolitan

Everything I learn about Francis Ford Coppola's epic new film is weirder and weirder. And that includes what you need to know about when and where Megalopolis is streaming. The answer is about as wild as the film itself. And there's more than one reason why this situation is a little complicated.

The cast alone is sure to have people clamoring to see this film: Adam Driver, Natalie Emmanuel, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, and Shia LeBouf. Aubrey Plaza as a character called Wow Platinum?! I think we all agree that for a director as iconic as Coppola, who brought us The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, and Bram Stoker's Dracula, should be seen in the cinema. But that's not an option for everybody. Here's what we know about streaming options.

To be frank: it might not stream anywhere. And at Cannes Film Festival, Coppola expressed disinterest in a streaming deal. “I want to own [the rights to the film], which I do, so I’m not interested in selling that to someone else. I want to be able to control it," he said, according to Deadline.

But just for our own academic curiosity, where might this film end up streaming? Lionsgate is distributing Megalopolis in theaters. That studio tends to stream their releases on Starz. So if Coppola loses this battle, that's where I would guess the film lands.

But is Megalopolis on Starz yet?

Well, no! First of all, the film releases in theaters on September 27, so it's a bit too early. Second of all, see above.

So what if I don't have Starz?

A lot of people add Starz to their Amazon Prime streaming account. That's one option. If you're a cable subscriber, don't forget that Starz might be part of that package and you don't need to pay for the streaming service separately. And typically, the move if you don't have the streaming service for the film you want to stream is to rent or buy a digital copy on demand.

But since it seems as if Coppola isn't interested in all of that... maybe we're SOL on VOD? And if he sees streaming and home video as the same thing, does that mean that the movie won't even be released on DVD?

Is someone going to come to my home?

Here's the thing I keep tripping on when it comes to Megalopolis and streaming. It might explain one of the reasons why Coppola is so hesitant to hand it over. There's a live performance element to this film. Apparently, at a certain point, an actor emerges from the audience and interacts with the characters on screen.

So how is that even going to work if you're watching it at home? Do you need to invite a stranger over to watch it with you and talk back to your television? Are they going to send you a little script as a PDF that you or someone in your household acts out? Maybe streaming really isn't in the cards for this one, you guys.
