Is Meryl Streep Attending the 2026 Met Gala? Her Reps Officially Weigh In
Deep Dive on ‘Devil Wears Prada’
· CosmopolitanThough Meryl Streep channels Anna Wintour in a different font as Runway magazine’s editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, in The Devil Wears Prada films, she has yet to hit the famous Met Gala steps. The Hollywood icon has reportedly been invited to the coveted event multiple times throughout her decades-long career, but has never actually attended.
Since the highly anticipated sequel to TDWP just hit theaters ahead of fashion’s biggest night, fans thought this could finally be the year Miranda—I mean, Meryl—attends. So, is Meryl Streep attending the 2026 Met Gala?
According to an official statement her reps sent to BuzzFeed: nope! “Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended,” they said, adding, “While she appreciates Vogue, Anna, and her incredible imagination and stamina—it has never quite been her scene.”
Disney//20th Century StudiosAnne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Stanley Tucci in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which hit theaters on Friday, May 1.
The Oscar winner was allegedly set to co-chair the Met Gala a few years ago before backing out, and per The Hollywood Reporter, she was invited to co-chair again this year. However, according to former Cosmopolitan editor and Anna: The Biography author Amy Odell, Meryl reportedly declined her invitation this year because she “is flatly opposed” to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos’ involvement with Amazon as an official sponsor.
Interesting, considering Justin Theroux’s tech-billionaire character in TDWP2, Benji Barnes, has a striking resemblance to Bezos. Benji’s interest in buying Runway for his girlfriend, Emily, was apparently already written long before real-life rumors that the Amazon founder was interested in acquiring Vogue for Lauren Sánchez as a wedding gift spread last summer.
On May 3, The Devil Wears Prada 2 screenwriter Aline Brosh-McKenna told Variety, “Well, we already had a script and were making the movie when the rumors started happening. It wasn’t inspired by anything. But, we did say, ‘Whoa,’ when it happened.”
However, it’s hard to say whether that reasoning behind Meryl’s absence at the Met Gala holds any truth, so take it with a grain of salt!
