Tom Cruise Breaks Royal Protocol With Unexpected Gesture to Kate Middleton on the Red Carpet

Last night, the UK's TV and film industry was out in full force for the premiere of Digger at Leicester Square. The film, which is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, stars legendary actor Tom Cruise as well as a string of notable names including Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, John Goodman, Sophie Wilde, and more. So, in short, it's kind of a big deal.

The film also sees Tom undergo a *dramatic* transformation for the ages, which included a host of prosthetics and initially saw the actor sitting in the hair and makeup chair for a whopping six hours.

Anyway, that's all to say that this is clearly a performance of a lifetime in the already v v v storied career of Tom. So, when he took to the red carpet, all eyes were on him.

However, rather than just basking in all the glory (which ngl, would be us in that situation), the actor took the time to speak to fans and also greet and mingle with notables who came out for the premiere.

This includes none other than the Prince and Princess of Wales, who attended last night: William in a tuxedo jacket, and Kate in a custom Jenny Packham dress and some very meaningful jewelry.

The couple can be seen laughing and speaking with the actor from photos and video of the event. However, eagle-eyed fans have been quick to notice one other detail during Tom and Kate's interaction.

While descending down a series of steps at the premiere, Tom extended his hand to help Kate safely make her way down the steps, which she accepted. (It's worth noting that her flowing dress had a train, which swept along the ground, introducing the risk of tripping.)

For those not in the know, this actually breaks royal protocol: As a rule, people shouldn't touch members of the royal family unless they invite touch or extend their hand first.

However, Kate accepted the gesture in good grace, which fans have suggested is a sign of her good-natured personality.
