Gal Gadot Says ‘Wonder Woman 3’ Getting Axed and Henry Cavill’s Superman Exit Were ‘Not Handled Elegantly’ by the Studio but ‘We’re All Adults and It’s All Good’

Gal Gadot insists DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran told her they would develop “Wonder Woman 3″ with her returning in the title role after they took over the company and rebooted Zack Snyder’s DC Universe. When asked on the latest “Happy Sad Confused” podcast if Gunn and Safran ever told her they would be going in a different direction, Gadot responded: “They told me the opposite! Back in 2023, Gadot claimed in interviews with ComicBook.com and Flaunt magazine that Gunn and Safran were interested in developing “Wonder Woman 3.” She told the later publication that she even met with the new heads of DC Studios and “what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop “Wonder Woman 3″ with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’”

Sources close to the situation exclusively told Variety at the time that “Wonder Woman 3” was not in development at DC Studios and that nothing was ever promised to Gadot regarding another sequel, nor was there any definitive discussion of Gadot’s Wonder Woman continuing with the new DC Universe.

Gadot originated the role of Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, debuting in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” before leading her own two standalone films: “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984.” Gadot’s Wonder Woman also appeared in “Justice League” and had cameos in DC films such as “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Her two standalone “Wonder Woman” films were directed by Patty Jenkins. The two were developing “Wonder Woman 3” together before Gunn and Safran were named the new heads of DC Studios.

During her interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Gadot said she ultimately was not surprised when she got the boot from Wonder Woman because “I saw the way everybody else was handled. The Henry [Cavill] situation was not handled elegantly to say the least. Same with Patty [Jenkins]. It was not handled elegantly. We’re all adults and it’s all good. It’s not even about [James Gunn and Peter Safran]. They are there and they’re there to do what they believe in. It’s all good.”

Henry Cavill‘s return as Superman was officially announced in October 2024 after he returned as the Man of Steel in the “Black Adam” post-credits scene. The announcement was only two months before Gunn and Safran’s DC takeover was officially confirmed, and the duo did not have plans to bring Cavill’s Superman back. Instead, they rebooted “Superman” with David Corenswet.

Jenkins, meanwhile, had been developing a third “Wonder Woman” to star Gadot when news broke in December 2022 that their “Wonder Woman 3” had fallen apart after Warner Bros. leadership passed on Jenkins’ treatment for the sequel. Jenkins publicly exited the project. The news hit shortly after James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of DC Studios, which led to speculation that Jenkins had rebuffed efforts to reshape “Wonder Woman 3” to fit into their DC Universe.

“I never walked away,” Jenkins shared in a post on Twitter at the time. “I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”

Jenkins confirmed on the “Talking Pictures” podcast soon after that her experience with “Wonder Woman” was over “for the time being, easily forever.”

“They aren’t interested in doing any ‘Wonder Woman’ for the time being,” Jenkins said. “It’s not an easy task, with what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they are planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is and they have to follow their heart and do what they’ve got planned.”

With her time as Wonder Woman over, Gadot said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that she’d likely not return to the role even if the chance arose to make “Wonder Woman 3” again at the new DC Studios.

“For me to go to do another Wonder Woman, I am not sure I would at this point in my life with four children and different schools and all of that,” Gadot said. “To check out from all of them for such a long period of time, it doesn’t work for my life anymore at this point.”
