‘Cold Wallet’ Lands North American Distribution From Well Go USA (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

Indie film distributor Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the thriller “Cold Wallet” from Blue Finch Films.

Directed by Cutter Hodierne (“Fishing Without Nets”) and presented by Steven Soderbergh, the film stars Raúl Castillo (“Cassandro”) and Melonie Diaz (“The First Purge”), with Tony Cavalero (“The Righteous Gemstones”) and Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”), as well as Zoe Winters (“Succession”).

The film follows a ragtag team of vigilante Redditors who, after losing everything in a cryptocurrency scam, attempt to track down and kidnap the elusive crypto empire kingpin responsible for their sudden financial ruin. But when the home invasion takes a turn for the worse, they unwittingly become pawns in a psychological game that will test both their loyalty and their sanity.

Well Go has slated the film for an early 2025 theatrical release. The movie, which first premiered at SXSW 2024, will have its west coast premiere at Screamfest Horror Film Festival in L.A. on Oct. 10.

“’Cold Wallet’ adds a thrilling twist to the heist genre through its gripping portrayal of the worst possible scenario for anyone who has ever bought in to the high-risk, high-reward world of cryptocurrency in hopes of making it big,” said Well Go USA’s director of acquisitions and production Brennan Lane.

The script was penned by John Hibey (“Fishing Without Nets”), who also produced the project alongside Benjamin Wiessner (“Werewolves Within”) on behalf of Vanishing Angle, and Hodierne. The film is based on an idea for a young adult crypto heist movie by Justin Staple and adapted into a story by Hibey and Hodierne.

Derek McMurtry, Justin Staple, Raul Castillo, Melonie Diaz, Tony Cavalero, Josh Brener, Leo Matchett, Michael Musante and Matt Miller served as executive producers. The film won the Decentralized Pictures and Soderbergh’s Andrews/Bernard Award.

“I’m grateful and excited to be working with Well Go to release ‘Cold Wallet,’” said Hodierne. “Their expertise in the genre film space gives us confidence that the movie is in great hands, and the team is enthusiastic and on top of their game.”

“We couldn’t have made this movie without the incredible support of our production partners, Test Pilot, who financed and developed the movie, Vanishing Angle, and Decentralized Pictures. Receiving support from Steven Soderbergh — one of my heroes — means the world to me. You can’t ask for a better co-sign in the heist genre than Steven. ‘Cold Wallet’ is a fun, thrilling film, rooted in web3 culture, and the timing couldn’t be better. Huge thanks to Justin Staple, who gave us the idea to make a crypto heist thriller, and to John Hibey for writing a stellar script. I’m beyond excited for the world to experience the incredible performances from our amazing cast: Raul, Tony, Melonie and Josh.”

The acquisition was negotiated by Brennan Lane for Well Go USA and Mike Chapman of Blue Finch Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
