Richard Linklater’s ‘Nouvelle Vague’ Trailer Recreates the Making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Influential Classic ‘Breathless’
by Jazz Tangcay · VarietyNetflix has unveiled the first trailer for Richard Linklater‘s “Nouvelle Vague.”
The movie is a valentine to the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic 1959 “Breathless,” and to the beginnings of the influential French new wave movement.
Shot on 35mm film in black-and-white by cinematographer David Chambille, the film stars Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Zoey Deutch as New Wave darling Jean Seberg.

Linklater’s movie depicts the young Godard as a film critic at Les Cahiers du Cinema magazine; his feisty relationship with his producer Georges de Beauregard who grew frustrated with the young director’s eccentric methods and almost pulled the plug, and his camaraderie with other New Wave filmmakers such as Francois Truffaut and Jacques Rivette, as well as Jean-Pierre Melville who did a cameo in “Breathless.” The film also traces his working relationship with Seberg, whom he challenged and refused to treat as the Hollywood star she was, and his ease in directing the happy-go-lucky Belmondo.
Shot almost entirely in French, with minimal English dialogue, “Nouvelle Vague” pays tribute to the New Wave era and includes actors portraying Godard, Truffaut, Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol and Agnes Varda — inspirations to some of the greatest American filmmakers of the New Hollywood age and beyond, from Martin Scorsese to Brian de Palma and Tarantino.
“Nouvelle Vague” was produced by Laurent Pétin at Michèle Halberstadt at Paris-based ARP Selection, while Halberstadt and Laetitia Masson are also credited as co-screenwriters, alongside Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo Jr.
“Nouvelle Vague” will be released theatrically in the U.S. on Oct. 31 and on Netflix U.S. on Nov. 14.
