Caro will lead the creative development of new projects, define the editorial vision of Secuoya Studios’ productions and oversee sales strategy and international market penetration plans. His remit will also include reinforcing relationships with creators, talent and strategic partners as the studio pursues locally rooted projects with broader global appeal.
The appointment comes as Secuoya Studios seeks to consolidate its position as an international independent studio, five years after its launch. Part of Secuoya Content Group, the company has expanded across film, series and unscripted production, positioning itself as a creation, production and distribution hub for premium content aimed at platforms and broadcasters.
Secuoya Studios’ recent international-facing credits include “Zorro,” its Prime Video-backed reboot of the iconic masked hero distributed internationally by Mediawan Rights; the William Levy-led “Montecristo”; and “Los 39,” a Spain-Colombia historical thriller which launched on Prime Video in Latin America.
“José María Caro brings together an exceptional combination of creative vision, international experience, and deep expertise in content development and production,” said Raúl Berdonés, executive chairman of Secuoya Content Group. His arrival, Berdonés added, “reinforces Secuoya Studios’ commitment to a strong and distinctive strategy,” while supporting “new opportunities for growth and international expansion.”
Caro joins after recently serving as HBO Max’s head of original fiction production for Spain. Earlier, he worked across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, holding senior content and production posts at Mediapro ME, MBC and Originals Media Group.
He later joined Buendía Estudios, serving as executive producer on “The Cook of Castamar,” before moving to Amazon MGM Studios as head of Spanish original series, where he was involved in “Red Queen” and “Los Farad.”
“I am delighted to be joining Secuoya Studios, a leading company in the audiovisual sector with a unique positioning and a clear ambition for global growth,” Caro said.
“I approach this new stage with great enthusiasm and with the goal of contributing to the company’s international expansion and strategic development. Secuoya Studios has extraordinary talent, vision, and potential to continue growing in the global market, and I am very excited to be part of that journey.”
The company operates from Madrid with a presence in Latin America — including Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile — and the U.S., and has been advancing a pods strategy built around local creative and production cells designed to generate, adapt and distribute content across territories.
