Released in theaters on May 15 through Focus Features, “Obsession” quickly became one of 2026’s most unexpected box office stories, turning a low-budget horror premise into a cultural juggernaut. The film has grossed more than $370 million worldwide, making it Focus Features’ highest-grossing movie to date. In another rarity for scary movies, audiences and critics have been enthusiastic about “Obsession,” as evidenced by the film’s “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls and the 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Written and directed by 20 year-old Youtuber Barker, the film follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a hopeless romantic who uses a mysterious object called the “One Wish Willow” to make his crush fall in love with him. But what starts as a wish-fulfillment fantasy quickly curdles into something far more sinister, as Nikki (Inde Navarrette) becomes dangerously attached. Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter also star.
In his review of the film, Variety film critic Guy Lodge writes that “Barker chooses his shocks as carefully as his yocks, timing them so that they count, and wasting no energy on needless explanations and background lore.”
The PVOD release includes bonus content such as a behind-the-scenes featurette and director commentary from Barker. A physical media release on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD is slated for July 14, and is expected to stream on Peacock.
