Emma Stone’s ‘Bugonia’ Sets Peacock Streaming Date Amid Oscar Buzz

by · Variety

As Emma Stone and her “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos eye a return to the Oscars next year, their latest movie, the paranoid thriller “Bugonia,” will release on Peacock on Dec. 26.

The film stars Stone as Michelle Fuller, a wealthy CEO who gets kidnapped by two men obsessed with conspiracy theories and who believe she is secretly an alien intent on destroying Earth. Stone and her co-star Jesse Plemons, who plays one of her kidnappers named Teddy, are getting Oscar buzz for their roles. They each picked up Golden Globe nominations this month for lead actress and actor in a musical or comedy, and the film is up for best musical or comedy.

Variety’s awards editor Clayton Davis predicts “Bugonia” screenwriter Will Tracy to get an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay, as the film is a remake of the 2003 South Korean dark sci-fi comedy “Save the Green Planet.” Stone and Plemons are on the bubble for lead actor and actress in Davis’ current predictions.

The “Bugonia” cast also includes Aidan Delbis as Plemons’ fellow kidnapper and cousin who goes along with his dangerous plan. Comedian Stavros Halkias plays a police officer who investigates Fuller’s disappearance, and Alicia Silverstone plays Teddy’s mother.

“Bugonia” was named one of the top 10 movies of the year by the American Film Institute Awards, and it was nominated for best picture by the Gotham Independent Film Awards. It’s also nominated for best picture, lead actress and adapted screenplay by the Critics Choice Movie Awards.
