‘Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’ Limited Series Moves to Netflix From Paramount+

The scripted limited series based on the murder of JonBenét Ramsey has moved to Netflix from Paramount+, Variety has confirmed. Netflix will release the series this winter, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. It is now titled “The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.”

The series, which is headlined by Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as JonBenét’s parents, was originally reported to be in the works in March 2024 and received a formal greenlight at Paramount+ later that same year. It completed production in January 2025.

Following the Paramount-Skydance merger in the summer of 2025, the new regime went over the Paramount TV slate and made several decisions, which included not moving forward with this show. They likewise scrapped several other projects, including a potential second season of “Dexter: Original Sin.”

Producer 101 Studios then began shopping the series, with Netflix ultimately acquiring it as they have with several other completed seasons of television in the past few years.

The true crime series will explore the murder of six-year-old Jonbenét, who was found murdered in the basement of her family’s home just hours after she was reported missing. The case was the subject of intense media attention at the time and continues to be even nearly 30 years later, as no one has ever been convicted of the crime. Multiple documentaries and news specials have been made about the case to date.

Along with McCarthy and Owen, the cast includes Emily Mitchell as JonBenét Ramsey as well as: Garrett Hedlund as Det. Steve Thomas, Alison Pill as Det. Linda Arndt, Shea Whigham as Alex Hunter, Owen Teague as Shane Edwards, Clifton Collins Jr. as Det. Tom Trujillo, Angus Caldwell as Burke Ramsey, and Jaime Ray Newman as Amelia Hunt.

Rory Cochrane, Chris Bauer, Will Patton, Jeremy Bobb, John Billingsley, and Josh Stamberg appear in recurring roles, while Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma are guest stars.

Richard LaGravenese, Harrison Query, and Tommy Wallach are writers and executive producers on the show, with LaGravenese also serving as showrunner. David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin executive produce for 101 Studios. McCarthy is also an executive producer, as is Anne Sewitsky.
