‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ Singer Bonnie Tyler Hospitalized for Emergency Surgery in Portugal

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer behind 1980s hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” has been hospitalized in Portugal. 

A statement was shared to the 74-year-old singer’s Facebook and website on Wednesday breaking the news to fans and acknowledging the situation. 

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement read. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

However, a spokesperson told The Guardian Thursday that she had been placed in a medically-induced coma to “aid her recovery.”

“We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please,” the statement continued, “We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

According to Tyler’s website, the singer was set to embark on a tour later this month. The first concert was scheduled for May 22 at SummerLUST Music Festival in Malta, followed by shows in Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Turkey, Austria, Scotland, England, Romania, Switzerland, Denmark and Wales. 

Born in 1951, Tyler first broke onto the music scene with her hit “Lost in France” on her debut album “The World Starts Tonight,” released in 1977.  The largely popular 1984 song “Holding Out for a Hero” was featured on the “Footloose” movie soundtrack that same year. Recently, she’s released albums including “Wings” in 2006, “Rocks and Honey” in 2013 and “Between the Earth and the Stars” in 2020. In 2021, she released “The Best is Yet to Come,” her 18th album. 

Tyler released an autobiography detailing her 50-year career in the industry, “Straight from the Heart,” in September 2023.
