Steven Soderbergh’s ‘John Lennon: The Last Interview’ Launches Sales in Cannes With 193 (EXCLUSIVE)

by · Variety

Ahead of its world premiere as a special screening in Cannes, Steven Soderbergh‘s doc feature “John Lennon: The Last Interview” is now launching in the market.

Patrick Wachsberger’s Legendary-backed sales and production company 193 has boarded the film, which features exclusive access to Lennon’s final in-depth conversation.

Produced by Nancy Saslow for Mishpookah Entertainment Group and Sugar23, “John Lennon: The Last Interview” captures an extraordinary and intimate moment in music history — the final in-depth conversation The Beatles icon ever gave. On December 8, 1980, Lennon and Yoko Ono sat down with a small radio crew in their New York apartment to promote the release of their album “Double Fantasy.” What followed was an unfiltered, wide-ranging discussion about music, politics, fatherhood and life. Just hours later, Lennon was killed.

Directed by Soderbergh, the documentary presents the nearly complete interview for the first time, framed by reflections from those who were present. As per the description, it reveals a “man at the height of his creative and personal powers, openly looking toward the future he would never see.”

Meta served as the film’s technology partner. For select sequences making up 10% of the feature, Soderbergh utilized Meta’s AI tools to create visuals that accompany Lennon’s esoteric ideas and reflections — about his past, present, and a future he was dreaming of — on what would tragically turn out to be the final day of his life.

This is the second Cannes market for 193, which launched in early 2025. At last year’s market, the company secured international sales for four marquee films, including the festival’s biggest sale in Lynne Ramsey’s “Die My Love.” “John Lennon: The Last Interview” marks 193’s expansion into premium nonfiction.
