IKEA Malaysia Addresses KL Health Dept’s 14-Day Closure Order of Its Cheras Outlet’s Swedish Restaurant

by · WORLD OF BUZZ

IKEA Cheras became one of the most talked-about topics on Malaysian social media this week after photos showing an official closure notice at its Swedish Restaurant began circulating online.

The viral images, widely shared across social media, showed a notice issued by the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Federal Territories Health Department (JKWPKL) ordering the temporary closure of the restaurant for 14 days starting from yesterday (17 June).

Closure due to maintenance works

The notice stated that the food premises had been ordered to close under provisions of the Food Act 1983, with the closure period scheduled to run until 1 July.

As speculation grew online, IKEA Malaysia released an official statement last night (17 June) confirming that its IKEA Cheras Swedish Restaurant has been temporarily closed while maintenance works are carried out. This is to ensure the facility continues to meet the strict hygiene standards expected by both IKEA and Malaysian health authorities.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the company said in its statement, adding that the temporary closure is part of ongoing efforts to maintain high standards of cleanliness and food safety.

Café and Bistro remain open

Despite the restaurant closure, IKEA clarified that not all food operations at the Cheras outlet are affected. The company’s IKEA Café and Bistro at IKEA Cheras remain open and continue to serve customers as usual.

For customers looking to enjoy the full Swedish Restaurant experience, IKEA has encouraged visitors to dine at its other outlets located in Damansara, Tebrau and Batu Kawan, which continue to operate normally.

Based on the closure notice displayed at the premises, the IKEA Cheras Swedish Restaurant is expected to remain closed until 1 July 2026, subject to the completion of the required maintenance and compliance processes.

For now, shoppers visiting IKEA Cheras can continue their retail experience as usual while waiting for the restaurant to reopen in the coming weeks.
