Andrew Scott's Elsinore wins TIFF audience award
· RTE.ieDublin actor Andrew Scott’s new film Elsinore has won the International People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The prize was announced on Sunday as the 51st edition of the festival came to a close.
The festival’s main People’s Choice Award went to Spanish drama La Bola Negra.
Scott stars as Scottish actor Ian Charleson in Elsinore, which tells the story of the acclaimed actor as he prepares to play Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while living with Aids.
Charleson, best known on screen for Chariots of Fire and Gandhi, stepped into the role after Daniel Day-Lewis left the National Theatre production in 1989.
He died in January 1990 at the age of 40.
Directed by Simon Stone and written by Pride screenwriter Stephen Beresford, Elsinore also stars Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson, Joe Locke and Peter Mullan.
The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month before screening at Toronto.
Scott’s performance has drawn strong reviews, with The Guardian awarding the film four stars and describing the Irish actor as "astonishing" in the role.
Scott has his own history with Shakespeare’s tragedy, having played Hamlet in Robert Icke’s acclaimed stage production in 2017.
Elsinore will receive its European premiere when it opens the BFI London Film Festival on 7 October.
It will be released in Irish and UK cinemas on 29 January 2027.
