Funeral of Glen Hansard to take place in Dublin

The funeral of musician Glen Hansard will take place in Dublin this afternoon.

The Oscar-winning singer-songwriter died last Wednesday at the age of 56 in a road crash, hours after taking part in a trad session at The Wren's Nest pub.

Yesterday, over 11,000 people attended a public wake for him at the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

His funeral will take place at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin city centre at 1.30pm.

While the funeral will also be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be limited given the numbers expected.

Large screens will be showing the funeral at St Patrick's Close.

Music at the funeral will be provided by Mr Hansard's friends and family.

Glen Hansard: A powerhouse of self-belief and passion

Born in Ballymun, Dublin, on 21 April 1970, Mr Hansard began performing music at a young age, busking on the streets of Dublin before co-founding The Frames in 1990.

He also appeared in Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments, playing guitarist Outspan Foster.

Mr Hansard and Czech-Icelandic musician, Markéta Irglová, won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly in 2008.

He is survived by his wife, son and family.

Trafffic diversions

A number of traffic diversions will be in place around Dublin as a result of the funeral, which is due to leave The Coombe at 1.15pm and travel to Dean Street, Patrick Street and Patrick's Close to arrive at St Patricks’s Cathedral at 1.30pm

There will be rolling road closures during this time, gardaí have said.

The funeral is expected to depart St Patricks’s Cathedral at 3pm for a private ceremony at Mount Jerome, again with rolling road closures en route.

The funeral of Glen Hansard will be broadcast on the RTÉ News channel from 1.30pm
